The War

The French and Indian War, the final and most significant of four major colonial wars between Britain and France, erupted with a ferocity that reshaped North America. Unlike the previous conflicts that began in Europe and spread to the colonies, this war ignited on American soil, eventually engulfing Europe as part of the broader Seven Years' War.

The war officially began on May 15, 1756, when Britain declared war on France. Native American tribes, caught between the clashing European empires, chose sides based on their interests. Most allied with the French, leveraging their relationships and the French promise of restrained expansion. The Iroquois Confederacy, however, sided with the British and the American colonies, seeking to counterbalance French influence.

The initial spark of the conflict was lit in 1754 when a young Major George Washington was dispatched by the British to negotiate boundaries with the French in the Ohio Valley. The French, steadfast in their refusal to abandon their forts, met Washington's Virginian troops near Fort Duquesne. The resulting Battle of Jumonville Glen saw the death of French officer Joseph Coulon de Jumonville, an incident that inflamed French ire and set the stage for broader conflict. Washington hastily constructed Fort Necessity, but his outnumbered and outmaneuvered forces were soon compelled to surrender.

Meanwhile, the Albany Congress convened to strategize and solidify colonial defenses.
